Foreign volunteer Habib: It was a wise decision to come to Shanghai

Meticulous community administration brings happiness

Market potential drew Habib’s family to Shanghai while the sense of happiness provides them with some kind of emotional belonging. “This well-being is manifest in terms of citizens feeling safe going out at night and the policemen often met on the streets.” Habib admires Chinese policemen. He clearly remembers when in university one foreign student had a traffic accident, the police immediately arrived at the scene and that student was fortunately saved from danger. “Chinese police have left me with the impression of being motivated and responsible.”

After graduation, Habib was especially impressed by Chinese police officers’ sense of responsibility. Entry & exit administration, community administration, traffic enforcement and other social activities all require their efforts.

“At first, I thought policemen would have trouble talking with foreigners but it is surprising to see that Shanghai police are international.” Habib has met quite a few Shanghai policemen who can speak fluent English and communicate with Habib with no difficulty.

At first, the layout for bicycle parking in Habib’s neighborhood was problematic and there were conflicts caused by disorderly parking. Discovering this issue, Habib tried calling the hotline of the community police. Soon, the Chenjiaqiao Community Police Station sent police officers to work with the neighborhood committee and estate management to investigate and solve the issue, finally setting up an exclusive parking area.
